Part of the Woodman Institute campus. American's first white abolitionist senator lived here during the Civil War era. John Parker Hale's daughter Lucy is best known for her engagement to assassin John Wilkes Booth, much against her father's will. The stately 1813 brick mansion today contains 40 glass cases filled with hundreds of Seacoast area artifacts in the downstairs museum - antique dolls, toys, tools, pewter, china, glassware, fire fighting equipment, musical instruments, lanterns, powder horns, scrimshaw, clocks, streetcar memorabilia, even a medieval Japanese suit of armor. There is also an extraordinary collection of textiles manufactured in Dover when it was world famous for its cotton products in the 19th century. Upstairs reconstructed rooms contain examples of Portsmouth furniture, including the desk of Jeremy Beklkap of Dover, the well known NH historian.
